Pet Dermatology Identifies and Treats Skin Conditions

lakewood_veterinary_dermatolgy.jpgLakewood vet offers pet dermatology services treating common skin conditions affecting animals. The majority of skin cases we treat are caused by allergens, although we also treat other skin problems due to internal health problems or parasites. We provide allergy testing and skin biopsies to diagnose and treat veterinary skin conditions.

While pets naturally scratch themselves, excess scratching or itching may be symptomatic of a skin condition requiring treatment. Regular check-ups can help identify and diagnose a skin condition before a pet’s health is further compromised. Our pet dermatology service treats many common as well as less common skin conditions, ringworm, and bacterial skin infections. Without proper treatment, these skin conditions can be worsen and be incredibly painful for pets.

Lakewood Veterinarian Reduces Risk for Skin Problems in Pets

Atopic or allergic dermatitis is a common pet skin problem triggered by environmental allergens. In some parts of the country, fleabites are one of the most common causes; a single fleabite can trigger a reaction that lasts for up to two weeks. Other examples of environmental allergens include dust mites, grasses, weeds, molds, wool and human dander. Symptoms include excessive scratching, biting, and licking the skin. Depending on the cause and severity, treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication, antihistamines, or other medications to control the allergic reaction.

Without prompt care, a pet’s constant licking and biting of the skin will create a warm, moist environment that is more susceptible to bacterial infections. “Hot spots” can also occur. These are areas of infection which develop rapidly and can become large and very painful. Prompt treatment is essential.

Although less common, both dogs and cats can develop food allergies or intolerance to certain food ingredients. The most common offenders are protein sources and include beef and chicken, with less common offenders being grains such as soy, wheat, corn, and products containing gluten. If pets develop intolerance to these ingredients, they may experience year-round itchiness. Pets that frequently scratch, itch or bite at their skin should visit your Lakewood veterinarian. Our vets can help with an elimination diet to pinpoint the trigger ingredient to avoid it in the future and replace it to meet your pet’s nutritional needs.

Our vets also treats skin conditions caused by parasites, bacteria or fungus. For example, sarcoptic mange, also known as canine scabies, is caused by tiny parasites called mites. Symptoms of sarcoptic mange include incessant itching, redness, sores and hair loss.

Regular dog grooming will keep your dog's skin and coat in good health. Bathing and brushing long coats reduces the risk for fleas, parasites and bacterial infections. During dog grooming, our groomer is also trained to recognize skin problems. This is part of our animal hospital’s commitment to providing high quality pet care.
